# 6 - St. Stephen Flats 

 Rated: Easy 

 8.4 miles, round-trip, out-and-back ride 

 

 Ride atop a flat and fast, well-maintained 

 water impoundment with gorgeous views of 

 east Lake Moultrie. This adventure has 

 miles blooming aquatic plants in the warmer 

 months, a guarantee to see large birds 

 (egrets, herons, osprey and bald eagle are 
-common sights!), and impressive panoramic 

 views of the lake. Bonus: at the end / turn- 

 around point, there are restrooms and 

 shaded areas with picnic tables! This ride 
-is 4 miles of the Palmetto Trail's scenic 
-Lake Moultrie Passage

Difficulty:  Moderate, but only due to distance. 

Distance:  8.4 miles, round-trip, out-and-back hike.

Time:  3 - 4 hours.

Surface:  Service road; small gravel, dirt.

Trail Marker:  Signs on vertical posts for the Palmetto Trail. This trail is very easy to follow.

Bike Type Nearly any bike type will work; road bikes (with tires over 28c), hybrid, trail/mountain bikes,

"gravel" style bikes and even kids' bikes!

Crowds:  Light; however, this route is popular with the locals. You'll probably see others.

Fees/Permits:  None.

Restrooms:  Yes. Located at the end/turn-around point of the ride at the Amos Lee Gourdine Boat Ramp.

Precautions:  There is no protection from the sun on the dike. A wide brim hat and sunscreen are recommended.

Biting insects can be formidable in warmer months. Bring insect repellent.
